pigmentHyper pigmentation is a disorder of the skin color, dark zones on the skin, and it is caused by the increased quantity of melanin, the dark pigment of the skin.

Exposure to sunlight, pregnancy, some diseases, age or trauma can lead to disorders of the melanin and create unsightly brown spots that are characteristic for this benign disorder. The causes can be divided into two groups: external and internal.

The external causes can be those coming from the environment, such as sun exposure, or due to chemical compounds (betaxolol, minocycline, estrogen, progesterone etc.) Internal causes are related to the genetic factors – people with darker skin are more prone to developing this disorder.

Freckles, age spots and sun spots are caused by the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun that damage melanin and result in temporary or permanent discoloration. Very often, you may notice these stains on the face and arms, but also can occur anywhere on the skin that has been exposed to the sun.

The scars from surgery can also cause discoloration of the skin, end even if the problem disappears, dark spots remain.

Melasma is a skin hyper pigmentation that occurs during pregnancy, although sometimes it can affect men as well. Brown spots cover the face – mainly the nose and cheeks. This disorder usually passes by itself after pregnancy and do not cause major problems.
